About Us
we treat our client's Property like our own

Our Mission

The overall goal of a property inspection is to help ensure that your expectations are appropriate with the structure you are proposing to buy. To this end we assist with discovery by showing and documenting observations during the structure inspection. This should not be mistaken for a technically exhaustive inspection designed to uncover every defect with a building. Such inspections are available but they are generally cost-prohibitive to most homebuyers.

MARK HUGHES

New Owner

Mark has a wealth of experience and has been a licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois for over thirty years.  He has been involved in many aspects of engineering from analysis and design of improvements to the actual construction of large scale public works projects.

Mark is newer to the home inspection industry but could not have had a better person to guide and mentor him than Domicile’s founder Dan Cullen.  Dan recently wanted to shift away from day to day operations with Domicile and Mark purchased the company in late 2019.  Dan still performs inspections and is critical to the development of new inspectors at Domicile.

Mark has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois and was the City Engineer for the City of Elmhurst for six years.  He recently ran a materials testing laboratory that focused on concrete failures and just prior to joining Domicile got into analyzing issues for over 300 distressed structures while working for a prominent Chicago area basement waterproofing/foundation stabilization contractor.

Mark is no stranger to hands-on residential construction either as he built his own 2-1/2 car garage as well as constructing a second story addition to his home. Mark is married and the proud father of three grown children that are starting to make their own contributions in the world. Mark is a huge music fan and hosts a weekly radio show where he dives into one of the most diverse record collections on the planet every Sunday from 9 to Noon on NEIU’s station the Wizard– WZRD @ 88.3 FM in NE Chicago or streaming at wzrdchicago.org

DAN CULLEN

Founder & Personnel Development

Dan’s long and diverse building construction career began in 1976 when he became an apprentice carpenter. Achieving journeyman status four years later, Dan worked in home building, industrial truss repair and concrete construction before founding his own remodeling and construction company in 1981.

After fifteen years improving and repairing homes in the Chicago area, Dan brought his diverse construction expertise to an insurance service firm, where he worked as a home inspector for Allstate, American Family and other insurance companies.

In 1999 Dan founded Domicile Consulting. Since that time he has performed over 10,000 home inspections throughout Chicagoland and built a loyal base of repeat customers via his outstanding service, dedication and integrity. He is the lead educator for the Domicile entity for home inspection education and routinely “re-educates” builders and developers on the best building practices. His motto: “Without Fear or Favor”.

Having retired from the Chicago Fire Department in 2010 following 31 years of service, Dan now enjoys spending time with his family as well as helping our clients understand and improve their homes and property.

BRAIN CULLEN

Licensed Inspector

Brian grew up on the south side of Chicago and began to work on homes by his dad’s side, which sparked his first paint contracting venture while still in high school.  As a licensed electrician with over 40 years of experience managing, designing and maintaining electrical systems in some of Chicago’s tallest skyscrapers—and a few bungalows to boot—he brings a deep background of some of our city’s most complex mechanical systems.  A homeowner since 1978, he’s remodeled basements and baths, replaced roofs, windows, porches, and patios.

After getting his home inspector’s license in 2014, Brian joined Domicile Consulting. His mantra: a steadfast commitment to seeing jobs done right. He is dedicated to providing a highly ethical, top-rated home inspection service, so buyers will have peace of mind when purchasing their new home.

Brian lives with his wife and two daughters in Chicago.

HEATHER MAIER

Licensed Inspector

After over 20 years working as a Chemical Engineer managing projects for large corporations leading teams of engineers to successful completion of challenging assignments, Heather decided she wanted to do something where she had the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, which lead her to the path of becoming a licensed home inspector.  Heather enjoys taking time to inspect a home with the client while answering questions and giving advice about repairs.  As your home inspector she completes each assignment by utilizing her knowledge of home construction, home repairs, environmental issues and possible problem areas.  She is dedicated to honest, detailed, thorough and timely inspections.  She draws on her broad knowledge from start to finish to provide an objective assessment of the home’s condition to allow clients to make an informed buying decision.

In her spare time, she is active in many local fundraising projects, dedicating her time and resources to improving her community.

JAVIER CANGIANO

Licensed Inspector

Javier Cangiano started a landscape company when he was 22 that went from just cutting lawns to full landscape installations and then hardscape design and installation. He sold that business after the crash of 2008 and went on a 2 year sabbatical traveling to Central American and Asia. Once returning to the working world he began a career in the trades as a rough framer primarily working on additions which progressed into trim carpentry.

When the foreclosure market started growing after the 2008 housing industry collapse, he worked for a company that repaired homes to a sellable condition. This experience provided him with a more rounded introduction to all aspects of the mechanical systems in a home. After 3 years of working in this industry he was introduced into the inspection business and never looked back. He has worked with a high-volume inspection firm and has completed close to 3000 inspections over the years with them. Residential inspections led to multi-family and commercial inspections and that’s where he has really found his niche. He really enjoys educating potential buyers on all aspects of one of the biggest purchases of their lives.

When he has free time he loves to travel. He is also an avid skier, backpacker and generally anything that has to do with the outdoors and nature. He is a dedicated father to a young daughter who is a competitive dancer and loves what she does. Javier is also a rabid soccer fan and was elated when his native Argentina team won the work cup in 2022.

James Adams

Licensed Inspector

James has close ties to the City of Chicago.  Born and raised in the city, he graduated from Hyde Park Academy and through that High School became a panelist for a program that focused on the success of youth in Chicago.  He attended Mayoral lunches with Rahm Emmanuel and was also invited to the White House where he met President Obama and ended up subsequently meeting him two other times.

Prior to becoming a home inspector, James was the operations manager for Frontier Airlines at O’Hare airport and an independent contractor for Amazon.  James knew he wanted something different in life and hit on home inspection as a career path.  James received extensive training from domicile inspectors and when we felt he was ready he began performing solo inspections.  Over two years and 500 inspections later James has developed a keen eye for evaluating properties.

When he is not performing some of the best inspections in the Chicago area, he stays busy raising his young daughter and working on cars.
